Gender Up Front: Crusher is Coming

A Year 2 teaching and learning unit which focuses on outcomes in the key learning areas of English, Studies of Society and Environment and Health and Physical Education

Holistic objectives

Students will learn to use a range of literary and non-literary genres in a range of appropriate social contexts. Students will also refine their underlying attitudes, processes, skills and knowledge by deconstructing gender stereotypes, specifically notions of masculinity, through a critical analysis of children’s literature. They will make informed decisions about appropriate behaviours for themselves and their classmates. They will recommend to the school administration proactive strategies which will address the gendered dimensions of student behaviour.

Integrating Device

Crusher is coming, a book by B. Graham (1992), is used to integrate the activities in this unit. After investigating the text, children will explore ways to make playing safer in their school.
