Pedagogy and leadership
"If the core imperative of educational leadership is about student learning, evidence would suggest that the most significant educational factor in the achievement of student learning is teacher practices, rather than principal leadership. This consistent finding in the school effectiveness literature has influenced how we have framed our approach to leadership in two key ways. First, we consider that productive educational leadership is centrally concerned with classroom practices. Second, we acknowledge that educational leadership should be exercised by principals, deputy principals and heads of departments, but it is not limited to them and should also be exercised by teachers, students, parents and others."

Action research for professional development
Concise advice for new action researchers. The idea of self reflection is central. In traditional forms of research – empirical research – researchers do research on other people. In action research, researchers do research on themselves. Empirical researchers enquire into other people’s lives. Action researchers enquire into their own. Action research is an enquiry conducted by the self into the self.

School Case Studies
From the Schools Work Towards Gender Equity website
http://www.dest.gov.au/archive/schools/genderequity/index.htm
I just had to look at the children…
The school is a co-educational primary school with about 700 students. It is situated in a large regional city in an area of high unemployment and of economic and cultural diversity. There is a focus on Asian Studies; and Indonesian is taught from Reception (the first year of school) to Year 7.
www.dest.gov.au/archive/schools/genderequity/2_1.htm
A critical incident
The school is a co-educational primary school situated in a community that has a fairly high socioeconomic profile and is drawn from many different cultural groups.
www.dest.gov.au/archive/schools/genderequity/2_2.htm
We've got commitment across the whole staff
The school caters for students from pre primary to Year 10. It is 600 km from the State's capital city with a population of 1100. About 12% of the students are from Aboriginal families. Most of the students live in town with about 10% coming in from surrounding rural areas. There is a lot of unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse and a general acceptance that a high level of violence exists in the community.
www.dest.gov.au/archive/schools/genderequity/2_3.htm
Not 'just the boys' - a focus on gender in Year 8
The school is a large secondary school situated in a suburban area of a State capital city. The community is generally quite affluent. One of the features of the school is a performing arts and recreation centre built on site and used by community groups.
www.dest.gov.au/archive/schools/genderequity/2_4.htm
An emphasis on collaborative learning skills
The junior primary school is designated as being in a `most disadvantaged' socioeconomic area of a State capital city. There is a high percentage of single parent families in the community and violence, particularly against women, is a common occurrence in many homes. Under special staffing arrangements the school is able to select staff to meet the needs of the student population of 214 children in Reception to Year 2 classes.
www.dest.gov.au/archive/schools/genderequity/2_5.htm
Investigating inappropriate behaviours
The school is situated in a coastal town of rapid population growth. There is a wide socioeconomic range among students who come from an extensive feeder area and from several different primary schools. Approximately 650 students attend the school in Years 8 to 12. Features of the school include an agricultural section, a school pool, a special needs centre and a very active student council.
www.dest.gov.au/archive/schools/genderequity/2_6.htm
Empowerment ... from the bottom up
The school is co-educational and is part of a multi-campus college situated in the outer suburb of a State capital city. The student population of 450 students in Years 7-10 is representative of about 20 different ethnic backgrounds. There is diversity in the socioeconomic status within the community, ranging from industrial and working class to upwardly mobile, fairly affluent professional and business people.
www.dest.gov.au/archive/schools/genderequity/2_7.htm
We had to widen their perceptions ...
The co-educational primary school is located in a low socioeconomic area of a large capital city. The school was opened in 1992 and the community is mainly young families from a range of cultural backgrounds. The school has received a system award for excellence in addressing gender issues.
www.dest.gov.au/archive/schools/genderequity/2_8.htm
Gender in the curriculum
The school is a well established girls' school with a tradition of academic success. It is situated in a capital city and draws its students from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. As a school with a strong church foundation, the Religious Education department has great influence on the philosophy of the school and how this is interpreted within aspects of curriculum and organisation.
www.dest.gov.au/archive/schools/genderequity/2_9.htm
Construction of gender in primary school
The school has an enrolment of less than 200 students. It is situated in a large country town with a high proportion of Aboriginal students, students from non-English speaking backgrounds, students with disabilities and students whose families live in poverty. There is high unemployment and many families are transient.
www.dest.gov.au/archive/schools/genderequity/2_10.htm
A smorgasbord of research and innovation
The school is a P-13, independent girls' school in a State capital city. The students are from relatively affluent home backgrounds.
